北海道ではメジャーなべこ餅♪

つい最近、桃の節句が終わったばかりのような気もしますが、気づけばもうすぐ端午の節句ですね。男の子がいる家庭はこいのぼりを出したり五月人形を飾って５月５日に背比べをしたりするのかな＾＾

端午の節句といえば、こいのぼりや五月人形をだして、柏餅やちまきを食べたりするものだと思っていました。日本のどの地域でも同じだと思っていたのですが、北海道では柏餅ではなく「べこ餅」を食べるんです。北海道でも柏餅を食べる地域もあるのですが、道南や青森、日本海側ではべこ餅のほうが多いようです。

べこ餅なんて聞いたことありますか？

「べこ餅」とは、主に木の葉の形をしたツートンカラーのお餅なのですが、道内でもさまざまな色や形をしたべこ餅が作られています。
材料に、白玉粉もしくは上新粉と片栗粉、砂糖、黒砂糖、水を使い、砂糖と白玉粉による白色の生地と、黒砂糖と白玉粉による黒色の生地を作り、二色の生地を使って、白と黒のツートンカラーのお餅を作り、それを木の葉の形にして蒸します。こうしてできたお餅が、白黒まだらの牛（べこ）のように見えることから、「べこ餅」と呼ばれるようになったそうですが、べこ餅の由来やルーツも諸説あるようです。

米粉と砂糖を使ったもちもちとやわらかい生地で、あんこが入っているものもあります。
形も木の葉の形が多いのですが、決まっているわけではないので、クジラモチとも呼ばれているすあまのような渦巻型をしているものもあれば、団子状にしたものまでさまざまなんです。
色も、黒と白、茶と白、緑と白などの二色が混じっているものもあれば、一色だけというものもあります。二色の場合は、木の葉の上下左右で色を分けたり、ランダムに混ぜたり、マーブル状にしたりとさまざま。
べこもち

味は甘すぎる甘さでもないし、お餅だけど食感はういろうに似ていて、食べればお腹も膨れ、子どもも喜んで食べる和菓子♪どんな色や形をしていてもべこ餅は食べやすくておいしいのです♪

伝統行事は全国共通のように思っていましたが、地域によっていろいろあるようです。今年の端午の節句はべこ餅を取り入れてみても楽しいかもしれませんよ＾＾近くに売っているお店がなくても家庭で作ることもできます。北海道でも今でこそお店で買う人が増えたけど、昔は各家庭で手作りしていたそうです。材料も身近にあるものばかりだし、作り方も材料を混ぜて練って成型して蒸せばできます。難しい作業がないので、子どもと一緒に作っても楽しいかもしれませんね＾＾
